In the Las Vegas that appears on Google Street View, the Sphinx has had its flamboyant Tutankhamen mask replaced by the eroded face of its original in Egypt. “If one of our images contains an identifiable face [...] our technology automatically blurs certain elements to prevent that person from being identified.” All faces are alike when they have been blurred by Google. In this way, these huge statues, be they religious or commercial, are hidden from the viewers gazing at them from their couch at home.

Bio

Marion Balac (1984, France) lives and works in Paris. She is a french visual artist graduated from ENSBA Lyon (BFA) and Panthéon Sorbonne, Paris (MFA with honors). Her work uses different media like video, photography, drawing, screenshots and websites. Collecting data and images, using webs as tools of creation, she elaborates new situations and fictions.
